Remember that the Redhills Online Market is now in full swing, which allows B and R members to place online produce orders that they may pick up at our storefront on Thursdays! This is a great way to get more of your grocery shopping done in one place, and we encourage all members to take advantage of it.

We are holding the next meeting of the membership on Wednesday, July 8 at 7:00 pm. To boost attendance at these meetings we encourage members to bring snacks to share and socialize before and after we go over the agenda.

Finally, the mural design submitted by local artist Echo Railton has been approved by our landlord, and so we will be moving forward with the project in the very near future. Please watch for updates on this to learn how you can participate!

December 5, 2010

Beginning January 1, 2011 we will be implementing an electronic system which automatically puts a freeze on members who are not fulfilling their required work shifts. Members who do not take responsibility for their shifts will have a hold put on their member prices, which will last until one week after the member makes their shift up. Please take the next few weeks to make certain you are on the schedule and get in the habit of calling and rescheduling prior to any shift you know that you are going to miss.

Remember, Bread and Roses has a very flexible scheduling system, which makes it easy to change a shift if you have a conflict. By being proactive and keeping up with your shifts, you are upholding the idea of cooperation upon which Bread and Roses was founded.

We also want to remind you all to make it down to the store front to place your vote on the Online Farmer's Market! Ballots are at the register. Te voting results will be announced at our upcoming Meeting of the Membership on December 14. As always, this meeting will be held in the store front at 7:00 pm.

We would like to put out a call for all members interested in getting more involved and taking a key holding position. We have a number of key holders who will be out of town for the month of December, and need more members to step up in order to maintain our current store hours! Those interested please email breadandrosesfoodcoop@gmail.com with "key holding" in the subject line.

Finally, our new neighbors at the Fermentation Market are now officially open! You can now pick up craft beer and wine next door. Bring your Bread and Roses Membership Card and get a 10% discount on your purchase there! We hope to see you soon.

October 9, 2010

Our produce committee has been hard at work devising a system that will allow our members to purchase local produce in store, making Bread and Roses more of a one-stop grocery store, and we are happy to announce that we have put their new plan into action! Each Thursday we will be selling produce from local farmers in store from open until close. A detailed list of the items available will be sent out every Wednesday evening with a rundown of what we will have in store. For the produce, you must bring cash! It is all sold on consignment for the farmers so none of the money is going through our register, hence you cannot use credit/debit cards to purchase it. Also, keep in mind that the more we take advantage of the produce carried on Thursdays, the more farmers will want to participate, which will ultimately result in a larger availability of in-store produce!

We also wanted to remind you all that our next General Meeting of the Membership is scheduled for Tuesday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be the first held in our new location, so for those who have not yet made it in to the store to take a look around, this would be a great opportunity to do so! Please email any agenda items to breadandrosesfoodcoop@gmail.com

September 12, 2010

We would like to remind you all that the General Meeting of the Membership will be held this Tuesday, Sept. 14th at 7:00 p.m. As always, the meeting will be held in the Bread and Roses store front. Please submit any agenda items to breadandrosesfoodcoop@gmail.com

This month we will be voting on three new members of the Board of Directors, as three of our current Directors are stepping down. Our three new nominees are:

Rachel Kaufmann- My name is Rachel Kaufmann and I am nominating myself for a position on the Board of Directors. I have headed the local products committee and have held a weekly key holder shift since we first opened in December 2009. I also help with distribution committee, doing the weekly orders from UNFI. I do not plan on leaving Tallahassee anytime in the near future.

Tom Papp- My name is Tom Papp, and I am applying for your vote for the B&R Board of Directors. I became a member of the co-op in November of last year, and have been steadily pursuing increasing levels of involvement within the organization since then. I am the Monday morning Keyholder, a member of the Produce Committee, Co-Committee Head for Food Ethics and Product Info, and Committee Head for Food Stamps. I've worked for/with non-profits for the last five years, and been involved in social justice and community activism and organizing for the last eight. Since my first job, at a local health food store in my home town, i've been fascinated with healthy, organic alternatives to the mass-market food industry. I'll continue to work hard for our community, and am committed to helping Bread and Roses grow into something greater!

Austin Boyle- Austin Boyle is nominating himself for a position on the board of directors of Bread and Roses.  He has been an active member of the coop, never missed a member-worker shift, took over on the finance committee when Heather was gone, and has worked keyholder shifts.

Because we have exactly three nominees and three positions opening, the vote will simply be to approve each nominee as a new Director.

Finally, we are happy to announce that we have the lease for our new space on Railroad Avenue! This means we will need all the help we can get planning, organizing, and executing the move to our new location. We will be sending out information on the moving dates, requests for volunteers, and equipment wish lists via email starting this week!

We hope to see you all Tuesday!

August 28, 2010

As many of you know, at our last General Meeting of the Membership we concluded the vote on two proposals regarding the cooperative's potential move to a new location. For those who were unable to attend the meeting, here are the final results:

  • Proposal 1: Yay-37   Nay-3   Stand Aside-3
  • Proposal 2: Yay-33   Nay-1   Stand Aside-9

For those interested, meeting minutes are available in .pdf format on our website under the "membership" tab.

This vote determined that Bread and Roses will indeed be moving into a new location at 915 Railroad Avenue. We are currently waiting on the landlord to send us a draft of the lease, as well as for some repairs to be made to the building. Moving the store from one space to another will be an enormous task, and we will need all the help we can get! This will be an excellent opportunity for any members who need to make up shifts. Keep an eye out for more emails concerning the move in the near future.

Finally, for those who forget their cash and checkbooks when shopping at Bread and Roses, we now have a credit card machine! We require a $5 minimum purchase to use your card and still encourage cash and checks, as we are charged a small amount for each card transaction. However, we felt that this would ultimately help to make shopping at Bread and Roses a bit more convenient for our membership. We hope to see you all soon!

July 31, 2010

There are currently two proposals for an official vote of the membership. Each proposal concerns a potential move for the Bread and Roses store front to a new location. We encourage each and every active member to stop by and place their vote! Simply consult the keyholder on duty for a ballot.

Don't forget that our monthly general meeting are now on the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for August 10th.

We are holding new member orientations every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and every Sunday at 1:00 a.m. We hope to see you soon!
